Ringing in 2011 with gluten-free cupcakes from babycakes nyc la

There’s nothing like starting a new year off with gluten-free desserts (not to mention vegan too). I stopped off at Babycakes NYC’s downtown LA bakery on New Year’s Eve to get some cupcakes to pair with the gallons of champagne my friends consumed.

Pictured here are pumpkin, banana, chocolate chip vanilla and mint chocolate chip. The two chocolate chip flavors were the fan favorites that night.

Risotteria NYC- Gluten-free italian– pizza, pasta, beer

Typically, I avoid Italian restaurants at all costs. While there’s usually something I can find that isn’t pasta, the idea that so much gluten is floating around is scary. Risotteria in NYC is a safe haven for gluten-free eaters. There’s gluten-free pizza, pasta, paninis, beer and baked goods! I tried them all.

I’ve been here on two trips, and go home happy and full every time. Tip: arrive early, the lines can be long.

gluten free New York! Friedman’s Lunch – pulled pork sandwich

Heather’s in New York for a couple of months for work, so I recently took a trip to visit, and we made sure to check out all of the gluten-free options NYC has to offer. First stop: Friedman’s Lunch in the Chelsea Market. Heather stumbled upon this place while checking out the market and was pleasantly surprised to see the menu was extremely gluten-free friendly.

I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, available on a gluten-free bun. Perfectly toasted, this tasted like the real thing. The gluten-free bread costs an additional $2.25, but it was absolutely worth it. Looking forward to my next visit so I can try more items on their menu.

Gluten-Free Fair Had an Amazing turnout

The gluten-free fair in Benicia was an awesome experience. When we arrived, there was a line down the block. It’s obvious people are clamoring for all things gluten-free. The fair did not disappoint. There were vendors from all over the country sampling their products. It was great to be able to try everything. Heather and I made a lot of great contacts and ran into some old friends, as we grew up in Benicia. Great job to all of the organizers!

Downtown San Diego’s Bice offers Gluten-free pasta

On a recent trip to downtown San Diego, I met up with some of my family who lives there for dinner. We went to Bice, a nice Italian restaurant that has an extensive wine and cheese bar. Being gluten-intolerant, I usually avoid Italian places, but I did a quick scan of the menu beforehand and saw some fish and meat dishes that sounded safe.

The restaurant is modern in design and has a nice bar area. When we were seated, I scanned the menu and noticed on the bottom that gluten-free pasta was available. Great new for me! I ended up ordering the homemade marinated, quick smoked salmon, which was covered with acacia honey and pink peppercorns and served with brussel sprouts for a starter. And for my main, I chose the Capellini alla Cacciatora–or pasta, slowly braised, free-range chicken with wild mushrooms and tomato sauce–gluten-free of course! Both dishes were excellent.

I cannot recommend this place enough for anyone gluten-free in San Diego who wants to dine at an upscale Italian establishment and enjoy pasta.

Gluten-free and in the Bay Area? You’re in luck! On October 10, the Solano County Celiacs organization is hosting “A Gluten-Free Fair”  in our hometown of Benicia.

Held at the Inn and Spa at Benicia Bay (145 East D Street), the event will feature gluten-free vendors, entertainment and an auction. Heather and I will both be there.

shaun’s gluten-free, dairy-free birthday cake

My friend and neighbor, Peggy, made me an awesome gluten-free and dairy-free cake for my birthday party last month. She worked on it all day and impressed everyone with this beautiful chocolate-on-chocolate cake!  I didn’t ask for the recipe because I don’t stand a chance of pulling this off, but if you’re interested, let me know and maybe I can get her to share!

gluten-free mocha cupcake from babycakes LA

Tried this mocha cupcake from Babycakes LA the other day. The frosting was great – would’ve liked to try it on the brownie cake though.

It’s the gluten-free twins’ birthday!

Today is our birthday! Another year older, celebrated with gluten-free desserts. Mine was a flourless cake from Roy’s of Hawaii.
