tired? celiac symptom? Can B12 help?

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal says that a lack of B12 can cause people to feel drowsy and sluggish. It cites Celiac disease as a culprit in preventing absorption of this vitamin.

I know this was a symptom both Heather and I had. I currently take a B complex, which includes B12, but am thinking about the shots. Has anyone tried them?

Gluten-Free Fair Had an Amazing turnout

The gluten-free fair in Benicia was an awesome experience. When we arrived, there was a line down the block. It’s obvious people are clamoring for all things gluten-free. The fair did not disappoint. There were vendors from all over the country sampling their products. It was great to be able to try everything. Heather and I made a lot of great contacts and ran into some old friends, as we grew up in Benicia. Great job to all of the organizers!

more gluten-free cupcakes from babycakes LA

chocolate and mocha, chocolate and banana

May is Celiac Awareness month (though some celebrate in October). To celebrate, I headed over to  Babycakes LA and picked up a couple of their vegan, gluten-free cupcakes. I was in luck, they had a couple of special flavors. They had only one chocolate with banana frosting left, so I immediately chose that one. The second was one they had created for a custom cake – chocolate with mocha frosting. Both were great. I hope they’ll consider adding these to their cupcake rotation.

Babycakes LA is located in downtown Los Angeles. Check out my previous Babycakes reviews.

Antibody Test for Celiac Disease – Are you gluten intolerant?

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The advent of antibody testing to diagnose celiac disease has led to a substantial increase in the number of cases detected among children, a new study suggests.

Health

Celiac disease is a digestive disorder caused by an abnormal immune response to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley — as well as in many everyday items like medicines and vitamins. The disease damages structures in the lining of the small intestine called villi, which then impairs the body’s absorption of nutrients.

Traditionally, “classic” celiac disease was diagnosed when babies and young children developed symptoms like chronic diarrhea and significant weight loss. But in more recent years, experts have found that celiac disease has a wider variety of symptoms — including chronic abdominal pain, acid reflux, vomiting and constipation — particularly in older children…

Gluten scan for the iphone. Sounds interesting

Just read about an interesting iphone app – a system that allows you to see if there’s gluten in products on your iphone. So, imagine shopping and putting in a UPC code to find out if it is actually gluten-free. I’m not sold yet on it though – it costs $1.99 a month. Heather – try it out, and let me know!
