New Year’s Lechon!

For this new year, we decided to try out a whole suckling pig, or lechon. While the presentation is not everyone’s taste, this smaller pig can feed 30-40 people. The meat was incredibly good, and provided left-overs for days. The pig is roasted over a spit and very moist and best-of-all: gluten-free!

Bouchon Gluten-Free Cookie mix at Williams Sonoma

Was surprised during a recent visit to Williams Sonoma to see Bouchon gourmet gluten-free cookie mix. Thomas Keller has partnered with Williams Sonoma exclusively to sell this gluten-free chocolate chunk cookie mix as well as a gluten-free brownie mix under his ad hoc restaurant label.

Unfortunately, both mixes have dairy ingredients, so I’m unable to try them, but I’ve ate at Bouchon, and the food is incredible. If anyone tries these, let me know how they are!

StellaLucy Gluten-free market in Claremont & San Clemente

Imagine a gluten-free person’s dream…It probably goes something like this: wandering into a grocery store and being able to pick up anything in the store without worrying about what hidden ingredients in each item are harboring gluten.

Well, that dream is a reality if you can get to Claremont or San Clemente, Calif. Both cities boast StellaLucy Gluten-Free Markets.

With hundreds of gluten-free products, StellaLucy stocks everything from frozen foods to pastas to cake mixes and more. I left the Claremont location last weekend with a bag full of food, including many new products I’m looking forward to trying and reviewing.

The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, willing to share recipes and gluten-free tips.

Plan a trip to visit one of these markets.

Can going gluten-free increase your performance at sports? That’s the theory behind why CrossFit promotes the Paleo diet, which eliminates gluten and other grains. It was also the main story in this Yahoo article about Tennis pro Novak Djokovic’s gluten-free diet and his winning streak.

Gluten-free Chinese food in San diego

Gluten-free Chinese food isn’t easy to find. Besides P.F. Changs, there aren’t a lot of restaurants where you can find gluten-free versions of your favorite noodle dishes or entrees such as beef with broccoli and moo goo gai pan. Well, if you live in the San Diego area, you are in luck.

Del Mar’s Rendezvous Chinese Fusion Cuisine is a destination for gluten-free eaters! They have an extensive menu of gluten-free dishes, and also have vegan and vegetarian choices.

They offer koonyaku noodles (in addition to rice noodles). These are actually a Japanese root vegetable, from the taro family. These noodle substitutes are high in fiber, low in calories, and they taste amazing. When you’re anywhere near San Diego, give this place a try.  *Tip: Wednesday and Sunday are half-price wine nights!

Best gluten-free cookies – Liz Lovely

I’ve tried several gluten-free store-bought cookies, and I have to say- Liz Lovely makes the best. Her chocolate fudge cookies are gluten free and vegan. They taste as good as the real thing. I’ve only found these at Jimbo’s in San Diego, but it looks like you can order these on their website.

Gluten-Free Pumpkin Cake Mix

Simply Organic makes a delicious and moist pumpkin cake mix. I made a cake using the mix and added a half cup of walnuts and topped it off with cream cheese frosting. If you’d like to make a two layer cake, buy two boxes of mix. One box makes a thin 9 inch round cake.
